Golf Blogging – It was a good year

Dec 06, 2006 @ 11:29 pm by Nigel Da Costa

December 21st marks my one year anniversary as a golf blogger. The last few weeks I have spent a lot of time alone driving to various meetings and it has given me the opportunity to reflect on my blog as well as golf blogging in general. A lot has happened with this blog and the golf blogging world in general, so rather than simply writing about my own experiences, I contacted 2 of my favorite bloggers, Bob Weeks and Robert Thompson to get their thoughts as well. Look for these interviews to appear shortly.

Yoga For Golfers – Favorites: Modified Pigeon

Dec 05, 2006 @ 10:21 pm by Yoga For Golfers

These yoga postures are featured in groups or series on Katherine Roberts’ website, under the ‘Performance Tips’ tab.  Here’s one of my all time favourites that gets raves from students who are golfers and participants of all sports to help learn coordination of breath & movement while offering an unbelievable stretch through the hips and glutes…

The golf swing requires proper hip rotation to generate power, speed, and balance from the hips. Additionally your low back health and endurance on the course are correlated to hip flex and strength.

You will feel a stretch in the hip flexors, glutes, piriformis, psoas, adductors, and abductors. As always, deep breathing is the most important function of the practice of yoga and is a powerful tool for keeping the body free from tension.

Diet & Nutrition- Part II

Dec 02, 2006 @ 12:06 am by Yoga For Golfers

I saw the Woody Harrelson movie “Go Further” a little over 2 years ago at a month-long 500-hour yoga teacher training at a time when I was totally into practicing yoga, staunchly pro-meat-eating and an anonymous chocoholic.  Of course all the vegan, organic, raw undertones of the movie went totally over my head at the time.  About 6 months ago I came across the book of the same name (“How To Go Further”: A Guide to Simple Organic Living with Woody Harrelson & Friends – Warwick Publishing Inc., 2005), and 2 months ago I read Fast Food Nation.  I still totally believe in the value of animal proteins in our diets (I’m willing to bet we were eating meat way back when we were whatever species we were before we evolved into humans), but reading these two books at this point in my life has had a radical effect on my diet – I am stupidly astonished that I feel SO much better physically eating these foods than I did even two months ago.  Also, everything I eat is SO YUMMY, I really don’t feel like I’ve sacrificed anything at all.

Since I have struggled with my weight my entire life, here is a brief excerpt from Go Further that really hit home for me, helping me understand why although I have so often starved myself to lose weight, or when not dieting enjoyed mostly canned/processed “foods” – it really just makes a lot of sense.
