John Daly Commercial Banned

Apr 25, 2007 @ 10:35 pm by Nigel Da Costa

Poor JD, even when he is minding his business, he is getting in trouble.

Hi most recent commercials for Maxfli have been yanked by CBS.  In the ads, Daly is driving a golf cart and drinking a beer.

“It did not meet the standards of the CBS network,” spokeswoman LeslieAnn Wade was quoted Tuesday by the The Los Angeles Times. “Any implied or direct reference to excessive consumption of alcohol would not meet network guidelines.”

The story continues with;

“We went into this with the idea that John Daly is fun, exciting and approachable,” Bob Maggiore, senior director of marketing for TaylorMade-Adidas of Carlsbad, Calif., also told the newspaper. “In hindsight, maybe we should have seen the risk. But we looked at John Daly as someone who lights up a room, not someone with a troubled past.”

Looks like Bob Maggiore might have some explaining to do to his bosses once the bill for the commercial arrives!  The rest of the story is HERE.

No Yank lobbyists coming to Canada this summer

Apr 24, 2007 @ 12:05 pm by Michael Shandrick

Good news for Canadians: better tee times this summer.

Lots of Republican golfers won’t be coming up this way any time soon.  You see, this past January the Democratic majority in the US House of Representatives vigorously launched into ethics legislation, which banned golf junkets on corporate jets used for government business. These new laws were part of an effort by legislators to clean up Washington’s culture of corruption, brought to an unprecedented level by Jack Abramoff, the top Republican lobbyist.
Abramoff, now serving an 11-year sentence in a Maryland minimum facility, is ratting out his colleagues in a plea bargain and is helping prosecutors win guilty pleas or convictions from a long list of his friends who were once among the rich and powerful.

What triggered the scandal were the costs of a “recreational” golf trip to St. Andrews, Scotland in 2003, led by the now-disgraced Abramoff.

These days, Abramoff might be in a work party wearing a safety orange jumpsuit along the highway. If he were allowed to talk to the public he could tell you about the time he and Tom Delay, majority whip of the House, flew across the Pacific in a charted plane to play golf at a luxury resort in the northern Marianas Islands in the South Pacific, paid for by special interest groups who wanted permission to keep Asian sweat shops in US territory. Abramoff could also tell you stories about the time he and his friends played the old course at St. Andrews and spent $156,000 for a few days of green fees and other legitimate political expenses. They flew there and back in a corporate jet. Abramoff now spends his time along the highway looking out at the tall fence surrounding his new home. He will seldom have enough space to swing a club. The only bag they will be carrying around is one that holds garbage or his laundry.

He is far from his country club set where he and his cohorts extorted, bribed and conned people into giving them tens of millions of dollars to leverage political clout in Washington. These include lobbyists, senior government officials, governors, Congressmen and appointed Bush cabinet members, who circumvented national security laws and the loathsome Patriot Act they helped legislate into existence.  Some twenty of them are under indictment, another twenty are already serving their sentence, while a dozen or more have been targeted for further indictments.
The most chilling part is that Abramoff conducted his lobbying in such an arrogant manner that it makes federal investigators wonder whether he ever worried about getting caught.

As for those who are now awaiting sentencing, their best days on the links are behind them. Their weekends will be spent preparing their testimony rather than teeing off. They will soon face the House Ethics and Rules Committee members.

“Sir, did you play golf in Scotland with Jack Abramoff?”

So many options…

Apr 20, 2007 @ 08:55 pm by Yoga For Golfers

I was embarrassed to admit this even to Nigel a few weeks ago - for the last six months I have been in the market for my very first set of golf clubs (I played 35 rounds last year with a WIDE variety of rental and borrowed clubs ranging from vintage to brand new…) but I am finding myself completely overwhelmed by the variety and price range of options, colours, names and all other considerations.

I have spent SO many hours in golf stores, actually playing on the course (last year and a few weeks ago in Arizona) and surfing the web, reading every detail about the various manufacturers and individual clubs, even bidding on eBay sets that now I’m starting to find them all interchangeable.
·          Someone told me Jazz is a good Canadian company;
·          Caroline last year got a lot of complements on her Mizuno set;
·          When I played Wilson rental clubs they just felt heavy like lead (the shaft was steel);
·          The Cobra I could take or leave for play but they looked pretty;
·          I’m curious as hell to try out Element 21 Golf Clubs!
·          Doesn’t Callaway make ladies clubs?
·          It sounded to me like the PING set Nigel has did pretty well for him & I like the idea of being personally custom-fitted

I just really want a set that plays well & feels comfortable, which I can’t see knowing until I’m at least 5 rounds into them.

Does price really make a difference?  And if not, then why would I spend $2,500 for a well-known brand name set when I could spend $300 on the clubs and the remaining $2,200 playing golf in Panama or England or Michigan?

Well whatever the case, I’m sure I’m not the only woman who finds the prospect of choosing golf clubs a little bit overwhelming, so regardless of which set I choose to try, I’ll let you all know how I find them as we go through the season - and I’ll definitely let you know if I ditch them and trade up before the season is over!

Warrior Custom Golf - revisited

Apr 18, 2007 @ 12:37 pm by Nigel Da Costa

Almost 2 years ago I was having major issues with a company called Warrior Custom Golf. It took me almost another year of problems with the company before I decided to write about them in this blog. Since that time, my post on Warrior Custom Golf has easily been the most popular post I have written. I am still getting comments on them to this day. A while back I had a server crash and I lost a lot of data but prior to that, there were at least 20 additional comments on Warrior.

This has been so popular that I wanted to re-post the original and see if anyone else has dealt with Warrior. Most comments have been negative but perhaps others have had good experiences. Please let me know either way.

I really thought long and hard about writing this post and finally decided it was something I needed to do. I have never done this before but I think I have a responsibility to discuss it. About 10 months ago I ran a golf tournament and one of the entry prizes were 3 free custom wedges from Warrior Custom Golf Clubs. You simply register for the golf tournament, fill out a form which ask for all your details (hand, height, weight, etc) and in 6-8 weeks your clubs would arrive at your house…all you do is pay the shipping. Now I know this is too good to be true but they came highly recommended from a client and I called Warrior to check it out. Turns out their marketing concept was to spend their money giving away wedges for the first year, then once people had them word of mouth would take over. So I decided to use them for the tournament.

Here I am 10 months after the tournament and about 80% of the people have received their wedges. Many haven’t seen anything and a few more were charged twice on their credit cards. It has been 10 months of calling and emailing the company and getting nowhere. I was finally able to track down an account manager, Aaron Munn, who tried to help but eventually stopped calling me back. He did however turn me over to his ‘customer service manager’, Christina Fuchs, who took 2 of my calls, returned 2 emails then just seemed to drop off the face of the earth and refuses to call me back. I am still trying to get these wedges for people from the tournament but am having no luck at all. In the last 6 months I have sent a total of 18 emails to Christina and Aaron and have left 8 voicemails for Christina and have yet to receive a response. Since that time I have spent more time reading about Warrior on message boards and forums and seems like this is not an isolated instance.

Bottom line, it was too good to be true and I should have realized it. Either way, keep an eye out for Warrior Custom Golf!

Thoughts on the Masters that was

Apr 10, 2007 @ 09:45 am by Devon

The first three rounds at Augusta seemed to be more of a US Open feel, with players struggling just to make Par.  Then they watered the greens, the weather improved and there were some familiar roars from the crowd.

To me, The Masters has always been about the back nine on Sunday and the ability for someone to make a charge.  It was a good finish to what was a pretty boring three days of golf.

The U.S. golf commentators were over the top on making excuses for Tiger, one even suggesting he was ill.  Nick Faldo provided great insight into a tournament he has won three times and called a bad shot, a bad shot.  I did think CBS did a good job of showing more shots from other contenders than just showing TIger all the time.

Time will tell if Zach Johnson is another one Major wonder or if he is emerging as a contender. He certainly deserved the victory and seemed very humble in the interviews I saw.

The Golf Channel… on Rogers?

Apr 08, 2007 @ 10:40 am by Yoga For Golfers

I thought that the Golf Channel had been moved to one of the higher-up digital channels on Rogers Cable (in the Toronto area) last year so I haven’t been watching a lot of golf on TV unless it’s on a regular channel or when I was in the States (I watched 2 days straight of Golf Channel in Los Angeles - it was great!); Nigel and I chatted about this the other day and so it was on my mental ‘to do’ list for the weekend to call Rogers to arrange access to the digital channel; I was on the phone with their computer and at the same time went searching through the on-screen guide only to find the Golf Channel on channel 78!!!  Does anyone know when this happened that they moved it back to tier 3?

I am so happy - I love great TV, especially when it doesn’t cost anything extra!  Ahhhhh; my Easter weekend is made!
